New Kids on State Street

We’re Jared and Ashleigh, the proud new owners of Common Housefly!

J&A

We are high school sweethearts from a small town on the North Carolina coast who made the crazy decision in 2015 to sell off everything we owned and move slightly west.  As they say, “the mountains are calling”, and they lead us straight here.

Growing up, we both have fond memories of shopping in kitchen stores with our families.  The clicks and clacks of all the fun and strange gadgets, learning about things that we never knew we needed…

It makes our adult hearts happy to be surrounded by things that have brought us joy for so long, to share that joy with others, and to be able to provide a space for our local community and producers.

We are so proud to have accomplished our lifelong goal of owning our own business, and in a very special year for us - our twentieth wedding anniversary! (this is us celebrating during a very busy December day)

We hope you’ll c’mon in and poke around sometime :)

An update from Common Housefly’s previous owners

The Man, The Myth, The Mentor

Mike

Hi from Mike.

And Happy 20 Year Anniversary to Common Housefly.

Marcia & I owned the store from 2014-2024 - and these were the best 10 years of my work career. But now I am “retired”.

My approach to life now is captured by a Bromberg lyric: “I like to sleep late in the morning. I don’t like to wear no shoes.” And my favorite t-shirt has the words “Not Today” across the front.

I stop by the store at least once a week and I look forward to seeing many of my old friends.

Peace.

The Housefly OG!

Kerryn

Mannnn, I can’t (well, and can!), believe it has been 20 years.

Common Housefly was born from two dreams: my desire to build a business of my own and my wish to honor my mom, whose portrait once hung front and center above the register. She absolutely loved kitchen stores, loved to cook, and despite working full-time, always made family dinners a priority.

These days, I'm still following my creative spirit through my artwork and by developing a patent-pending product designed to help fellow creatives and makers.

The housefly finds its way into my dreams a few times a month still!  I absolutely LOVED birthing that baby.  Tough at the get-go, but so worth the struggle and outcome.

Congratulations on taking it to the next level, Ashleigh and Jared!
